Mikumi National Park
Overview
Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and popular safari destinations, located just a few hours’ drive from Dar es Salaam. It is part of a larger ecosystem connected to the Selous (Nyerere) conservation area, making it rich in wildlife and natural beauty.
The park is known for its wide, open savannah plains that make it easy to spot animals like elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and wildebeests. Because the landscape is flat and open, wildlife viewing here is very clear and rewarding, especially during game drives.
Mikumi is often compared to the Serengeti because of its vast grasslands and abundant animals, but it is less crowded, offering a more peaceful safari experience. The famous Mkata floodplain is the heart of the park and one of the best places to see large herds of animals together.
The park also has beautiful scenery with mountain backdrops, seasonal rivers, and rich birdlife, making it a great destination for both photography and nature lovers.
