Trip Overview

Welcome to the ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro via the classic Marangu Route. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, this path is beloved for being the only trail on the mountain that offers communal sleeping huts, providing a touch of comfort amidst the rugged alpine elements.

The second day of trekking sees a dramatic shift in scenery as you leave the humid rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. As you ascend toward Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters, the trail offers breathtaking views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak and the distant, snow-capped Kibo summit. This is a longer day of walking, and your guide will emphasize a slow, steady pace to help your body adjust to the thinning air.

To maximize your safety and success, this day is dedicated entirely to acclimatization at Horombo Hut. Rather than pushing higher, you will spend the morning on a “climb high, sleep low” excursion, trekking toward the Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi Peak. This short ascent triggers your body to produce more red blood cells before you return to Horombo for a hot lunch and a restful afternoon. Taking this day to rest significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness and ensures you are physically prepared for the final push to the top.
