Trip Overview
This 6-day expedition is a specialized journey designed to witness one of nature’s most spectacular events: the calving season of the Great Migration. By visiting the Ndutu region (Southern Serengeti), you position yourself in the heart of the action where millions of wildebeest congregate to give birth, attracting high densities of cheetahs and other predators. The itinerary combines this seasonal highlight with the resident big cats of the Central Serengeti and the geological marvel of the Ngorongoro Crater. This route offers a front-row seat to the circle of life, from new beginnings on the short-grass plains to the drama of the hunt in the crater highlands.

Your destination is the Ndutu region, which straddles the border between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Southern Serengeti.

You will spend the day following the massive herds, watching newborn calves take their first steps and observing the intense predator-prey interactions.
The area is famous for its high density of cheetahs, which thrive on the open plains, as well as lions, hyenas, and smaller predators like bat-eared foxes. The sight of thousands of animals covering the plains is a photographer’s dream.

Day 4: Ndutu – Central Serengeti (2 hours)
Leaving the southern plains, you will drive north into the Central Serengeti (Seronera). The landscape shifts from the flat, treeless plains of the south to the savannah woodlands and kopjes (rocky outcrops) of the center. The drive itself is a game drive, offering chances to spot elephants and giraffes which are less common in the treeless south.
You will arrive in the Seronera Valley in the afternoon. This region is renowned for its year-round resident wildlife, particularly leopards which are frequently spotted in the sausage trees along the Seronera River.

You will ascend into the crater highlands, arriving at your lodge on the crater rim (or in nearby Karatu) in the late afternoon. The evening is spent relaxing and enjoying the spectacular views, preparing for the descent into the crater the next day.

It is a short drive from Karatu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, where you will descend 600 meters to the crater floor. This ancient volcanic caldera is a self-contained ecosystem teeming with wildlife, including the Big Five.
You will spend the morning exploring the crater floor, with high chances of spotting lions, hyenas, and the critically endangered Black Rhino. After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, you will ascend the steep walls and begin the drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
